Northanger Abbey – Val McDermid (Reading Challenge #6)
Val McDermid’s entry in The Austen Project was a delight to read. Northanger Abbey is my least favorite Austen, though it’s still a book I really enjoy. McDermid’s droll observations are amusing, as are her spot-on renderings of annoying, text messaging youths. Henry Tilney is no Captain Wentworth, but he’s no slouch either. The bully and buffoon John Thorpe, who thinks he’s entitled to Cat’s company, and his sister, the selfish and dishonest Bella, are entertaining and exasperating. I kinda wish the Hebridean Harpies series, the books that get Cat’s imagination going, really existed. This is the kind of story that makes me love reading.
